About Us

Atelier was formed in 2007 by the fashion designer Beca Lipscombe, illustrator Bernie Reid, both living in Edinburgh, and fine artist Lucy McKenzie, based in Brussels. The originality of their interior designs is born from the combination of diverse skill and experience brought together in their collaboration.

A fledgling company, their work to date includes commissions for public and private spaces, temporary and permanent display and design objects. Specifically suited to each environment, everything is realised with modest and often traditional techniques executed by the artists themselves. They use a variety of applied arts; draped fabric, decorative painting such as marbled and wood grained faux finishes, silk-screen and digital printing and stencilled motifs.

Examples of permanent design can be seen in The Flying Duck nightclub, Glasgow and the Christophe Strasse space of Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Cologne. Work is shown currently at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Kunstmuseum Aan Zee, Ostend and Lighthouse, Glasgow.

Conceptually, the partnership is rooted in a common interest in vernacular, artisan and specialised production which means their striking design is delivered with responsibility to the environment and local suppliers.

Visually, it is inspired by a broad range of historical precedents reflecting the plurality of Ateliers backgrounds. They believe that interiors should not be artificially imposed, but grow naturally, informed by the lives of those who inhabit them and histories of city and landscape. Their work is intended to enhance the character of a space, often by highlighting difference or triggering less obvious connections, but always with sensitivity and respect to those who use the space as their day to day backdrop.
